Honda Leasing Guide โ€ข Steve Padgett's Honda of Lake Murray

How Honda Leasing Works

Leasing lets you drive a new Honda with lower monthly payments and the flexibility to upgrade every few years. Here's everything you need to know โ€” explained simply for Columbia, Lexington, and Irmo drivers.

Leasing in Plain English

When you lease, you're paying for the portion of the car you use โ€” not the entire purchase price. That's why payments are lower. At lease end, you return the vehicle (or buy it if you love it) and walk away without worrying about selling or trade-in value.

Key Lease Terms Explained

Understand the language before you sign.

Capitalized Cost (Cap Cost)

The negotiated price of the vehicle โ€” similar to purchase price. A lower cap cost means lower payments. Yes, you can negotiate this just like buying.

Residual Value

What the car is predicted to be worth at lease end. Set by Honda Financial Services. Higher residual = lower monthly payment. Honda's strong resale value helps here.

Money Factor

The interest rate on a lease, expressed as a decimal. Multiply by 2,400 to get the equivalent APR. Example: 0.00125 money factor = 3% APR.

Lease Term

How long you'll drive the vehicle โ€” typically 24, 36, or 39 months. Shorter terms mean higher payments but more flexibility. 36 months is most common.

Mileage Allowance

How many miles you can drive per year โ€” usually 10,000, 12,000, or 15,000. Exceeding this incurs per-mile charges at lease end (typically $0.15-$0.20/mile).

Disposition Fee

A fee charged at lease end if you return the vehicle (usually $350-$400). Often waived if you lease or buy another Honda from us.

How Your Lease Payment Is Calculated

The simple math behind lower payments.

The basic formula:

(Cap Cost โˆ’ Residual Value) รท Lease Term + Interest = Monthly Payment

Example: 2024 Honda CR-V Sport

  • Negotiated Price (Cap Cost): $34,000
  • Residual Value (after 36 months): $20,400 (60%)
  • Depreciation: $34,000 โˆ’ $20,400 = $13,600
  • Depreciation per month: $13,600 รท 36 = $378
  • Add interest (money factor): ~$50
  • Approximate payment: ~$428/month

*Simplified example. Actual payments include taxes, fees, and vary by credit. Get exact numbers from our finance team.

The Honda Leasing Process

What to expect from start to finish.

1

Choose Your Honda

Browse our inventory or check current lease specials. Popular lease models include CR-V, Accord, Civic, and Pilot. Consider which trim level fits your needs.

2

Negotiate the Price

Yes, you can negotiate on a lease! The cap cost (vehicle price) is negotiable just like a purchase. A lower price means a lower payment.

3

Select Your Terms

Choose your lease length (24-39 months) and annual mileage (10K-15K miles). Longer terms and lower miles mean lower payments โ€” but less flexibility.

4

Credit Approval

Honda Financial Services reviews your application. Good credit (680+) gets the best rates. We work with all credit situations โ€” just ask.

5

Sign & Drive

Review your lease agreement, sign the paperwork, and drive home in your new Honda. The whole process can often be completed in a single visit.

6

Lease End Options

When your lease ends, you can return the vehicle and lease a new one, buy the vehicle at the residual price, or simply return it and walk away.

Understanding Mileage Limits

Choosing the right allowance for your driving habits.

Most Honda leases offer three mileage options:

Annual Mileage Best For 3-Year Total
10,000 miles Work from home, short commute, minimal travel 30,000 miles
12,000 miles Average Columbia metro commuter 36,000 miles
15,000 miles Longer commute, frequent road trips 45,000 miles

Local tip: If you commute from Lexington to downtown Columbia daily (~25 miles round trip), that's about 6,500 miles per year just for work. Add errands, weekend trips to Lake Murray, and occasional drives to Charlotte or Charleston โ€” 12,000 miles is usually safe for most Midlands drivers.

Going over? Excess mileage typically costs $0.15-$0.20 per mile. If you're unsure, it's often cheaper to buy extra miles upfront than to pay overages later.

Normal Wear & Tear vs. Excess Wear

What's acceptable when you return your lease.

โœ… Normal Wear (No Charge)

  • Minor scratches and chips from normal use
  • Dings smaller than a credit card
  • Worn but not bald tires
  • Light interior wear
  • Small windshield chips (under 1")

โš ๏ธ Excess Wear (Charges Apply)

  • Dents, scratches requiring body work
  • Cracked or severely chipped windshield
  • Torn or stained upholstery
  • Missing equipment or accessories
  • Bald or mismatched tires
  • Mechanical damage beyond normal use

Pro tip: About 3 months before lease end, schedule a free inspection at our service department. We'll identify any issues so you can address them before turn-in โ€” often cheaper than lease-end charges.

Honda Leasing Questions

What Midlands drivers want to know.

What credit score do I need to lease a Honda?

Honda Financial Services typically prefers 680+ for the best lease rates. Scores in the 620-679 range may qualify with higher rates. Below 620, buying may be easier to approve than leasing.

Can I negotiate the price on a lease?

Yes! The cap cost (vehicle price) is absolutely negotiable. A lower cap cost directly reduces your monthly payment. Negotiate just like you would when buying.

Should I put money down on a lease?

Not necessarily. A down payment lowers monthly payments but doesn't build equity. If the vehicle is totaled, you could lose that money. Many experts recommend minimal or zero down on leases.

What happens if my leased Honda is in an accident?

Your insurance covers repairs. If the vehicle is totaled, Gap coverage (often included or available) covers the difference between your insurance payout and what you owe on the lease.

Can I end my lease early?

Yes, but there are costs. Options include paying an early termination fee, transferring the lease to someone else, or trading into a new vehicle and rolling remaining payments. Talk to our finance team about your options.

Can I customize or modify a leased Honda?

Minor, reversible changes (floor mats, window tint) are generally fine. Permanent modifications that can't be removed at lease end may result in charges. When in doubt, ask first.
